About Cogmed

Do you have students who are easily distracted and have trouble completing tasks or following instructions? Are some of them struggling, particularly with reading comprehension and math, despite motivation and hard work? Poor working memory could be part of the problem.

Working memory is the ability to keep information in your mind for a short time, focus on a task and remember what to do next. It is a critical function closely related to the attention necessary for a wide range of cognitive tasks, and is one of the best predictors of academic achievement.

Research has shown that poor working memory underlies inattention and problems with learning. In fact, working memory is commonly impaired in people with ADHD,
learning disabilities, and even in about fifteen percent of typical learners.

What is Cogmed?

Cogmed Working Memory Training is an online evidence based intervention aimed at improving working memory and related functions like attention and learning capacity. We combine cognitive neuroscience with innovative computer game design and close professional support to deliver substantial and lasting benefits to students. With your assistance, the vast majority of students improve in the ABC’s of Cogmed: Attention, Behavior, and Capacity to learn.

Cogmed at work in Schools

At Bay Village City Schools, Bay Village, Ohio Thirty-five 9th graders used Cogmed Working Memory Training for 30 to 40 minutes per day, five days per week for five weeks. Prior to training, the average reading grade level equivalent of 9th graders in the sample was 7.26. Following training, the group of students on average showed a significantly higher reading level of 8.92. This is an increase of 1.7 grade level equivalent in just five weeks.

Cogmed: A Great Solution for RTI

As a web-based program that can be used during the school day, Cogmed is a perfect fit within the RTI framework. It is an adaptive learning program that gets more or less difficult depending on the student’s performance. This individualized learning allows all students proceed and succeed at their own pace.

Cogmed monitors student progress and provides automatic alerts to teachers when the student experiences a problem. The net result is student improvement in what we call the ABC’s of Cogmed: Attention, Behavior, and Capacity to learn.
