Principal sees turnaround he had “never seen before” in young man

Age: 14
Gender: Male
Location: Wichita, Kansas

Background: Despite being a smart and capable, this young man from Wichita wasn’t able to retain the information he needed in school and his grades were suffering as a result. It wasn’t that he wasn’t trying; he would just plain forget things. His mother said that he would get good grades on some assignments and then he would get zeroes on others when he would forget. He could not remember if he turned in assignments, sometimes insisting that he turned something in when he hadn’t, or just forgetting about them entirely. The boy struggled to stay organized at school and at home; his locker and bedroom were never tidy and he always struggled to follow instructions. Their doctor recommended that the young man see a psychologist who introduced them to Cogmed.

Key challenges:

  • Would forget his assignments
  • Could not remember important information from class
  • Had trouble listening to instructions
  • Often could not remember to sign his name at the top of his papers
  • Could not remember to bring the right books home from school
  • Bedroom and locker were always a mess
  • Medication “made him miserable”
  • Had ADHD symptoms

Training outcomes:

  • Mom says he has  matured
  • Stays focused to get his work turned in on time
  • Huge reduction in bad grades for forgetting to turn in assignments
  • Schoolwork, bedroom, and locker are much more organized
  • He is able to remember detailed instructions
  • Principal said “it was the most drastic turnaround I had ever seen”
  • Teachers who had been with him three years all commented on the drastic change they saw
