12 year old learns to read properly after completing Cogmed training

Age: 12
Gender: Male
Location: Houston, Texas

Background: This boy from Houston, TX suffered from severe attention problems in school. He had not yet learned to read properly by the age of twelve and had a great amount of difficulty initiating school assignments on his own. After being assessed by clinical psychologists, it was determined that although the young man had an overall IQ within normal range, he demonstrated a low working memory capacity, that is, a deficient ability to keep information in his mind for more than a few seconds.

Key challenges:

  • Could not read properly even at the age of twelve
  • Had trouble accomplishing school assignments on his own
  • Struggled to pay attention in the classroom
  • Often failed to recall what he had done throughout the day

Training outcomes:

  • Saw improved reading skills soon after training
  • Began to read books on his own initiative
  • Is more focused and keeps better track of his responsibilities and assignments
  • Remembers what he does throughout the day
  • Reminds his family members of things they are supposed to do
  • Has made strategies to maximize his new found concentration
  • He is calmer in the classroom and has improved  his overall learning capacity
