After a traumatic brain injury or stroke there is often a reduction in cognitive functioning associated with a severe deficit in working memory. Motor and speech problems are often associated with TBI or stroke and are addressed in rehab, but since working memory deficits are hidden, they are typically ignored. Because working memory is so closely related to attention, deficits in working memory caused by stroke or traumatic brain injury often result in poor performance at work and at school, as well as impaired social functioning. The severity of a working memory deficit following a traumatic brain injury or stroke is a key indicator in predicting the level of debilitation in everyday life. Because of this, there is particular interest is using Cogmed training on victims of traumatic brain injury or stroke as a way of ameliorating the effects.
