This nine year old from Singapore suffered from multiple problems related to attention. He would forget what he was doing in the middle of a task, lost everything, constantly daydreamed, and always shied away from challenges. In school, the boy made careless mistakes. He had trouble staying focused in class and would perform poorly on tests. He often failed to complete his assignments on time and homework was always a battle. His attention problems also affected him as an athlete. The boy was a very good basketball player, but his coach held him back because of his lack of focus and maturity.
The boy’s family decided to do Cogmed training and he took it very seriously. His behavior was excellent throughout the five weeks. The training took place as an after school activity and each day he would go into training room ready to work hard. The training coaches helped him to stay focused and concentrate. He loved going to his Cogmed sessions. What motivated him the most was beating his own score and the robot race at the end.
Changes became evident toward the end of the training period. He started to remember to bring his hat to school and did his homework much faster than before. His parents say that now, once he decides that he will do his homework he sits by his desk and he doesn’t leave until he is done, and the quality of his work has improved along with his diligence. He has even got in the habit of checking his bag before going to school.
Another major change was in his basketball. After Cogmed, the boy played so well that the coach finally promoted him to a higher group. His parents say that he has new found initiative and perseverance, and he feels good about who he is. He shows a new found degree of maturity, responsibility, pride, and joy. His self confidence is now second nature to him.
His parents and teachers are delighted with the significant positive changes they have seen in the boy since completing Cogmed training. He is competing in sports, keeping up with his peers in class, and enjoying school. He has become more mature and confident; it is clear that he feels good about who he is, which at the end of the day, is all his parents wanted.
