Mathematical Learning Disability

Mathematics is a discipline that is closely linked to working memory. Mathematical learning is an essential component in education and difficulties with math can cause generalized performance issues in school environments and everyday life. There are children who can be identified as having a specific learning disability such as in math and studies have shown that 5-8% of elementary students have a cognitive deficit that directly interferes with mathematical ability. As more research is being done about the specific cognitive functions that are involved in mathematical learning ability, the more it is clear that a working memory deficit, either generalized or specific to a particular component, is one of the main factors contributing to a mathematical learning disability.

Because of the link between mathematical difficulty and working memory deficits, Cogmed training is being investigated as a possible solution for people with mathematical learning disabilities.
