HIV and Neurocognitive Disorders

Mild Neurocognitive disorders are prevalent in the HIV population. Prior to the development of the Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), patients with HIV often suffered from a severe form of dementia, cases of severe Neurocognitive disorders dropped significantly after HAART was implemented. But there has been a rise in more mild Neurocognitive disorders in the HIV population in the post HAART era, concentrated mainly in the form of a working memory deficit. Researchers are investigating the efficacy of Cogmed training on the HIV population with mild Neurocognitive disorders in hopes of continuing to reduce the level of cognitive impairments in that population.
