Age: 53
Gender: Male
Location: Los Angeles, California
Background: This man from Los Angeles is a senior engineer responsible for major programs at a prestigious high tech company. He has been very successful in his professional career and shows no signs of slowing down. He spends his life comprehending and communicating complex and detailed concepts, but when he heard about the Cogmed training program – what it does and the research behind it, he decided he would give it a try. “I didn’t have a lot of expectations going into the program”, he said, “I was interested in what effects it had for someone who was considered healthy and pretty much on top of their game”.
During the training, he could tell that his brain was working hard. As he said, “It was interesting; you could almost feel your brain doing something different. Part of it was like a very powerful meditation…I liked that effect – the focus that it seemed to bring after a half hour to 45 minute sessions”.
One of the important aspects of his job is communicating highly technical concepts, and even though he never felt restrained with that part of his job, or struggled with communication in any way, he said that he noticed his vocabulary improved as a result of Cogmed training. “My word usage became a lot more interesting; I was tapping into a lot more styles of communication. I’m always talking to people and putting ideas together. I noticed my ideas were more complex and more well structured while I was talking”. As a successful professional who is used to having complex ideas in his head, he still saw noticeable improvement in his ability to process and communicate information. As he said, “My working memory, from my sense, had clearly strengthened – I was able to put together more complex ideas and was able to communicate them better”.
Another benefit he saw as a result of Cogmed training was more unexpected than the first, but just as welcome. He said, “My golf game got better!” One day, when he was playing a difficult course, he noticed that he was much more consistent in his shots and had a better sense of focus. “Consistency is the thing that one doesn’t have [in golf], he said. “The consistency was quite extraordinary – it was the best I’ve ever played in my life! – I’m still enjoying those benefits.”
When asked if he would recommend Cogmed to other professionals, including those who don’t feel like they are constrained by their working memory, he said “I would absolutely recommend it. I’ve talked to colleagues and senior managers that I’ve worked with and everybody has a sense that ‘I wish I could think more clearly and communicate more clearly’ – I think it is a worthy experiment for anybody and anybody could benefit from it.”
