What is Cogmed all about?
Read through this list of frequently asked questions to learn more about the Cogmed training program and our company. Because Cogmed is a new program, we understand that you have many questions. We recommend that you start by reading this web site, move on to participating in one of our free webinars and then talk to the Cogmed practitioner of your choice.
Do you have a question that isn’t addressed below? Feel free to ask us.
1. What is Cogmed Working Memory Training?
Cogmed Working Memory Training is an evidence-based, computerized training program designed by leading neuroscientists to improve attention by effectively increasing working memory capacity over a 5 week training period (with variations to that protocol).
2. Who is Cogmed training for?
Cogmed training is for people who wish to improve their ability to concentrate and are constrained by their working memory. Cogmed trainees range from young children to senior adults. Some have diagnosed attention deficits, some have suffered a brain injury, some feel the deteriorating effects of normal aging, and others find they’re not doing as well as they could, academically or professionally, given their intelligence and their efforts.
3. What is working memory and why is it important?
Working memory is an essential cognitive function necessary for a wide-range of tasks related to attention and focus. It is the ability to keep information in your mind for several seconds, manipulate it, and use it in your thinking. It is central to concentration, problem solving, and impulse control. Poor working memory is the source of many problems related to attention and is often linked to ADHD, and other learning disabilities.
4. Do the results last?
Yes, our research and our clinical experience show that the effects of Cogmed Training last after training. The reason is that once working memory capacity increases, you naturally continue to use it at its new level, which serves as constant maintenance training. Each Cogmed trainee also has access to optional Cogmed Extension Training at no extra cost.
5. Where can I access Cogmed training?
Cogmed is only available through a global network of professionals. Each Cogmed Practitioner is qualified by Cogmed to provide the training program and all are experienced in assessing and addressing attention problems. The Cogmed Network provides a professional service that is designed to give all users the best chance for maximum training effects. They will make sure your profile is good for training, and they will provide you with the software and the coaching needed. The training can also be done in school: talk to your child’s teacher or special education teacher about the possibility of implementing Cogmed training in your school.
6. Does insurance cover Cogmed training?
Cogmed training is not typically covered by insurance. Investigate the possibility of coverage with your insurance provider or talk to the Cogmed practice of your choice.
7. How do I know this will help me or my child?
In our research and in the practical experience of the Cogmed practices, 80% of users see measurable improvements. You should talk to the Cogmed practice of your choice to make sure your/your child’s profile is right for training. That does not mean you can be sure to get results. No intervention works for everyone. 80% is a number we are proud of, but we cannot provide guarantees in any particular case.
8. What kind of research is behind Cogmed?
Cogmed is developed by leading neuroscientists and based on the breakthrough concept that the working memory can be improved through intensive, systematic training. Cogmed is dedicated to providing only products that are proven to be effective in rigorous research. There have been numerous studies that show Cogmed to be effective and apply the golden standard of clinical research: double-blind placebo-controlled designs. Several of the studies have been published in leading, peer-reviewed scientific journals. The work has been done by Cogmed’s founders and by independent teams at leading American and European universities. No other brain training product or attention training method can show this degree of research validation.
9. Where does the training take place?
Cogmed training is done at the user’s home, in school, or at work. The program is web-based and compatible on any computer that supports flash. The initial interview, start-up meeting, and weekly coach calls from the Cogmed Qualified Practice can all be done over the phone. If you do not live close to a Cogmed practice, you can still do the training program over distance. Click here to see the full list of Cogmed Practitioners or call us (888-748-3828) and we will help you contact a provider.
10. Is Cogmed training a substitute for medication?
No, it is not. In the case of users on ADHD medication, Cogmed training is a complementary intervention. Stimulant medication and Cogmed training impact the brain in different ways. Medications will have effects that Cogmed training does not, particularly regarding hyperactivity. Cogmed training will also, in many cases, have effects that cannot be achieved by medication only. Talk to your doctor or a Cogmed practice to learn more.
11. How is Cogmed different from other types of “brain training”?
Cogmed is different from “brain training programs” in three ways:
1. Cogmed training is backed by solid research that no one else can match.
2. Cogmed training is provided exclusively by a network of carefully trained and qualified professionals. They make sure each Cogmed trainee gets the coaching needed for the best possible results.
3. An outstanding track record of strong and lasting effects in our thousands of trainees in America and around the world show that Cogmed training makes a real difference in people’s lives.
In short: research, coaching, and results. Obviously, the results are what really matter.
