A Powerful Combination for Reading GrowthDeady Middle School (Houston, TX) is taking innovative steps to prepare its students to reach college and career readiness. To get there, the administration has teamed with Pearson and the University of Houston to deliver a first of its kind literacy initiative that pairs two state of the art digital interventions: Cogmed Working Memory Training and iLit to help students meet and exceed their goal.
Cogmed, which helps improve the students’ working memory and improve their capacity to learn, was administered to Deady students in the Spring of 2014. This fall, Deady middle school students are using the tablet-based iLit intervention for struggling readers. This combined clinical and educational intervention study will measure how adding working memory training to digital literacy intervention affects the reading gains experienced by poor readers.
