Age: 6
Gender: Male
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Background: With a quick trigger, this six year old from Tokyo had trouble not saying whatever popped into his head. He would start saying things repeatedly and then it would be hard to stop him. This happened in group activities and it was easy for him to get carried away. It was difficult for him to listen to other people and sometimes his words were so harsh or out of the ordinary that his friends would get intimidated. His peers would often make fun of him which in turn caused the boy to retaliate in an overly-aggressive manner. He was frequently scolded by adults because of his behavior and this also caused his class mates to make fun of him. Overall, his social relationships at school were unpleasant and difficult. He himself recognized the difficulties and understood how he should behave differently after discussions with his mother, but he would always fall back into his bad tendencies.
It was at this point that his parents decided to do Cogmed training. The boy was highly motivated and he made huge gains in the working memory tasks over the course of the five week training program.
After the training, the boy has become much calmer and better able to control his impulses. He recognizes himself that he is not scolded by adults anymore and shows more patience. His parents say that his handwriting has improved and he is much better at organizing books and materials to bring to school the next day.
He gets in trouble a lot less frequently and accordingly his friends tease him much less. His relationships are much more pleasant and less difficult than before. He has even been able to move from his special seat in the front row where his teacher made him sit in order to keep an eye on him.
