Research has shown a strong correlation between anxiety/depression and poor academic performance and overall poorer quality of life. It is well accepted that negative emotional states in children and adolescents effect many aspects of educational achievement and decision making. One of the ways that this link is being understood is through the portal of working memory deficit. Working memory deficits often coincide with anxiety/depression, and could be the underlying issue perpetuating negative emotions by causing poor academic performance and poor decision making. Researchers are exploring the idea that improving academic performance and reducing anxiety in young adolescents who experience negative effect in school can be achieved through working memory training.
